A Leaf

This morning I was struggling with my mental health again. I went to my favourite place for a walk. I’m still frustrated that part of my walk has recently been fenced off, but I went nevertheless.

As I was walking around the first lake, I was thankful about how much wildlife I saw. I watched a fox walk and play along the path just ahead of me, I watched a nuthatch dance down a tree stump, I watched a robin as he sung to me from the fence, I watched dragonflies, damsilflies, and butterflies as they danced around my ankles. I saw swans, ducks, cormorants, grebe, moorhen, and coots.

However, my mood remained frighteningly  low. I was struggling with feelings of fear, anger, sadness, and confusion. I was feeling hate for myself and hate for my life (even though I love so many people and so many things it doesn’t seem to stop these thoughts – I wish they would stop completely!!).

I was walking along the path struggling to hold back the tears. Suddenly I noticed this leaf:

Immediately I started singing Jesus loves me this I know… (see below for the song lyrics).

I found it remarkable how much comfort I got from a leaf.

Here are the lyrics I was singing:

Jesus loves me, this I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me,
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me, this I know (Anna Bartlett Warner)
