Day 4: Joy

39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth.41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. (Luke 1:39-48)

It seems entirely possible that Mary and Elizabeth both felt joy upon greeting one another. I imagine that one of the emotions Elizabeth felt when she was filled with the Holy Spirit was joy, although it doesn’t say that. It does, however, say that the baby in Elizabeth’s womb, whom we know from later accounts to be John the Baptiser, leapt for joy.

What does joy feel like to you? For me it usually feels like a bubbling up of love and intense happiness all mixed up together. This is usually accompanied by what my children call ‘happy tears’.

I can only imagine what it felt like to have a baby leap for joy in the womb. In my mind it would feel something like when my youngest daughter had hiccups while in the womb!

It seems to me that Elizabeth was triply blessed, and that was just in these few verses! 1. She was visited by her cousin, 2. She was filled with the Holy Spirit, 3. She had a unique experience of her unborn baby leaping for joy.
