20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. (Luke 2:20)
So, the shepherds had seen the angels. They had heard their message. They witnessed on the way to Bethlehem about what they had been told. They visited the baby in a manger.
Once the shepherds had been to visit the baby, and discovered that the message held true, they returned to their field praising God because they knew that prophecy had been fulfilled.
Surely their hearts were full with joy. Perhaps they were even singing. I wonder what it was like to observe the shepherds praising and glorifying God. I imagine that as the shepherds made their way back to their field, there was just as much commotion as before. I imagine that they told everyone about what they had experienced. I wonder how many people walked with them as they told their story. I wonder how many heard it from the people whom the shepherds told. It’s fascinating to think how far and how fast this news travelled.
