Day 30: Moving again

19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.” (Matthew 2:19-20)

The angel seems to like appearing to Joseph in dreams!

This is their third move (that we know of) in a matter of years. I appreciate that they knew that this wasn’t their ‘forever home’. Even so, I expect that moving must have been just as stressful then as it is now.

I find it interesting that their only instruction was to go to the land of Israel. I, personally, would have expected more specifics. I wonder how Mary and Joseph’s conversation went, when he told her about his dream. Do you think they felt happy, excited, relieved? Or frustrated, cautious, daunted? I wonder whether the prospect of moving again was welcomed fondly, or received disappointed groans. What might Jesus have made of it all?

Also, did you notice that it says, ‘for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead’? That suggests to me that there were more than one (Herod) who wanted Jesus dead, and that more than just Herod had died. I’ve not noticed that before. Perhaps it’s referring to all the people that Herod gave orders to. But, then, if that is so, why and how did they die? I guess we’ll never know for sure, but it’s interesting to explore, nonetheless.
