This is part 3 of my series of blog posts on the content of 1 John chapter 4.
Today we will be looking at verses 12-16, ‘No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.‘ (1 John 4: 12-16 NKJV)
John seems to be rather repetitive. I wonder whether that was for effect or due to his advanced age.
In September 2016, while reading the gospel according to John, I became a committed born again Christian. My journey of faith up to that point had been rather complicated. I’d already made a form of basic commitment to God as a young child, and as such had experienced a certain level of what John describes as ‘abiding’. But, since September 2016 that has taken on a whole new meaning for me and I’ve experienced it much deeper.
It seems to me that out of abiding grows love and other gracious gifts from Father God – Abba.
